The Journal of Mental Health in Rural Schools is a peer-reviewed publication dedicated to
advancing research, practice, and policy on mental health in rural educational settings. For the
purposes of this journal, “schools” are defined as K-12 institutions, colleges, and universities,
recognizing that mental health challenges and solutions span all levels of education in rural
communities.

Rural educational environments face unique challenges, including limited access to mental health
professionals, geographic isolation, social stigma, and funding constraints. These issues affect
not only students but also educators, administrators, and support staff. The Journal of Mental
Health in Rural Schools provides a platform for exploring innovative solutions, evidence-based
practices, and policy interventions designed to promote mental well-being across these diverse
educational contexts.
This journal seeks to foster collaboration between scholars, practitioners, policymakers, and
community stakeholders to enhance the mental health services available to students, staff, and
faculty in rural settings. The journal covers a wide range of topics, from social and emotional
learning (SEL) and trauma-informed care to telehealth innovations and strategies to reduce
stigma.
